In second grade, we work to include a lot of music and movement in our classroom. We use it to learn curriculum and allow them to move throughout the day. By tying in music, the students typically remember things more easily. Our children are able to work on completing their Star Reader, which includes a variety of genres.  They can also complete the Caldecott Reading Challenge.  Great Brain Projects are available for them to research a topic and present it to the classroom.  Students are able to participate in the after-school program, the chess club, as well as the drama club.  We have many field trips throughout the year that allow them to experience a variety of art, drama, and other enriching things.  Our school has assemblies that bring wonderful enrichment to our school.  Our second graders also have art and music during their school day.  We also do class plays or programs that allow children to interact with others in dramatic scenes, memorize scripts, and songs.  We love working with our second grade students to help them be well-balanced!

1:00 PM

The Halloween Parade is a tradition at Wasatch Elementary. Students are invited to dress up. No masks, blood, or weapons. Face paint is fine. Wearing a mask on the top of the head is OK – just be sure the face is visible. Students will have time to put on their costumes during lunch. Parents are invited to enjoy the parade. The Halloween Parade will be from 1-2 PM.

Museum of Natural Curiosity Field Trip

Wednesday, October 12th

9:45-Noon

Second Graders will be riding the bus to Thanksgiving Point to explore the Museum of Natural Curiosity on Wednesday, October 12th. We will leave at 9:45 and arrive back at Wasatch around noon. Students will be back in time to eat lunch at school.

We are asking for a $3 donation per child to cover the cost of the bus. No child will be excluded due to inability to pay.

We received a grant to cover the cost of the entrance fee to the museum. We appreciate Thanksgiving Points’ support of student learning!

We will need six parent volunteers for each class. Volunteers may NOT bring siblings or other children. The Museum is very strict on this policy and will not allow our grade level’s entrance to the facility if we have extra children with us.

Parent Volunteers:

  • ride the bus with us
  • monitor students at the museum and on the bus
  • come without siblings or other children

Please let us know if you can chaperone a small group. This is an exciting field trip for our second graders!

Milk and Cookies Reading Challenge!

"Milk and Cookies" Reading Challenge!

In an effort to keep students reading throughout the winter break, ALL Second Grade students are encouraged to participate in the “MILK and COOKIES” Reading Challenge!

The challenge simply consists of students reading a minimum of 20 minutes every weekday during the break (including January 1st) on top of the minimum monthly goal of 280 minutes. Students will be required to return their DECEMBER READING CALENDARS signed by a parent with the total number of minutes read, by Wednesday, January 6th.

To qualify to participate in the “MILK and COOKIES” celebration after winter break, students will need to have read a total of 480 minutes for the month, including January 1st.

We appreciate your support in having your student reach this goal! We want students returning from the break, ready and confident to begin middle of year reading fluency testing.

Fluency Building Tip: One of the best ways to build reading fluency is to reread. You can reread one paragraph or one page at a time.

Happy Holidays!

It's Here!

10:30-11:30 a.m. in the Wasatch Main Gym

We are so excited to have  you come and see us perform our songs, dance, poetry, and readers theater, and, share facts and artwork about Chinese New Year! Students may wear a Chinese outfit if they have one. Or, students may wear red or black clothing. However, regular school clothes are just fine. If you plan to take your child to lunch after the performance, please let me know ahead of time so that it will be easier for me to keep track of everyone. We hope you enjoy our program!

Parts for the Chinese New Year

Students’ parts for the Chinese New Year Program on February 19th have been sent home!Your child has been assigned a part to prepare. The assignment was attached to a green handout.

Because of the large number of students, we have worked very hard to give every child a meaningful part. Some students will have a speaking part; some will be acting (without speaking); and some will have their artwork displayed on the large screen during the program.

If your child has a speaking part, we are asking that the part is practiced at home and memorized by February 9.

If your child has an acting part, the costume will be provided and suggestions as to appropriate clothes to wear will be given.

If your child is creating artwork, we will be doing this in the classroom.
